At STAUB, we’re all about finding solutions to tough problems. Whether that’s for our customer’s production fabrication needs or addressing our industry’s critical issues, we’re not afraid to tackle a challenge. And we believe that bringing key people to the table is one of the best ways to solve a difficult problem.

On Wednesday, February 20th we had the honor of hosting a roundtable discussion with U.S. Senator Rob Portman and key industry and community leaders. Attending, were ten Dayton-area manufacturing business leaders as well as representatives from the National Association of Manufacturers, Ohio Manufacturers Association, Dayton Development Coalition, Dayton Chamber of Commerce and the Dayton Region Manufacturers Association.

The topic of conversation ranged from the benefits of recent tax reform to the negative impact of new tariffs and ongoing challenges of filling the manufacturing workforce pipeline.

Our company president, Steve Staub, who is a passionate advocate for effective workforce development, had this to say about the event:

“I appreciate the support of Senator Portman in addressing these critical workforce issues. We can do much better than our current one-size-fits-all education system and the ineffective practice of pushing every student toward a standard four year degree.

We owe it to the next generation to help them discover and prepare for the many rewarding career opportunities that don’t require a degree and tens of thousands of dollars in college debt. Jobs in the manufacturing industry are a great example, with U.S. manufacturing workers now earning an average of $81,000 per year in salary and benefits.”

This roundtable was part of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) ‘State of Manufacturing Tour’. Jay Timmons, NAM President and CEO, released this statement:

“Staub Manufacturing is a great example of manufacturers keeping their promise to invest in their communities and their people with the tools from tax reform and regulatory certainty. We’re proud to spotlight them and have Sen. Portman, a steadfast manufacturing ally, join the tour. Manufacturing has always been the source of America’s strength—and today, we’re building the future. We’re rising to the occasion to solve real-world problems.”

Staub Manufacturing Solutions president, Steve Staub, a long-time industry advocate, was one of several business leaders who spoke to Centerville High School students recently. The goal of the panel discussion was to bring awareness to some often overlooked career paths, such as manufacturing, construction and transportation.

“Events like this are a great way to open young minds to good-paying career options that they may not have considered,” says Steve Staub. “I think they need to understand that, today, the average welder makes more than the average lawyer.”

Twice a year, Xtreme STEM, a local not-for-profit, organizes competitive events that brings together student teams from all over Southwest Ohio to battle for BOT domination. The fall Xtreme BOTS competition is Saturday, November 3rd and will be hosted by Staub Manufacturing Solutions in our adjacent warehouse at 2551 Thunderhawk Court, Dayton, Ohio 45414.

Behind all the excitement of the BOTS competition (like sparks, flying metal parts and WWE style announcing) is the simple mission to inspire the next generation to consider a career in manufacturing. Each high-school team is matched with a manufacturing “mentor” company to help them with the design and build of the Bot. This connection is the ‘secret sauce’ of the program. It exposes the students to all aspects of modern manufacturing processes in a way that is interesting and memorable. Then when the time comes for them to choose a career path, manufacturing won’t be a mystery, it will be a viable career option.

STAUB is proud to support successful student-focused efforts like Xtreme BOTS to help turn the tide on the workforce shortage in the manufacturing industry.

The event begins at 8:30 am and is open to the public. Admission is $5 (suggested donation).

We are so excited to be one of the finalists for the Dayton Business Journal’s Business of the Year (in the Manufacturing category). Congrats as well to Prime Controls Inc. and Value Added Packaging, Inc. The winner will be announced at the gala on November 8th. Stay tuned!

As you may have noticed, our company president is an outspoken advocate for the manufacturing industry. Recently, he spoke with reporter John Bush at the Dayton Business Journal about the challenges facing our industry and what he and others are doing to solve these long-term problems.

In an August Dayton Daily News article, reporter Lynn Hulsey asks the question, “How do we get the economy to boom for all?” She wonders how our region can provide better (living wage) jobs. We’re honored that she included us in the conversation and featured our fabrication team in the accompanying pictures and video. You can read the full write-up here.
